We have recently organised a mass balloon release at SSVM World School , Coimbatore , India on their Sports Day, one of its kind and hitherto unheard of in our country! We do not find words to describe how much the children enjoyed this unique event in brilliant sun shine on the school ground.

Mass balloon releases are fun to watch and are great for making kids happy. Mass balloon releases are a fun, unique expression to showcase the start of an event , a means to highlight a message or an exciting focal point to an event. These are a few reasons why SSVM World School , Coimbatore  , India chose to release balloons on their sports day . While doing so , this great school had taken every effort to inspect and check  whether we followed all rules on mass balloon releases, though its NOT YET a law in our country. And here was how we,at bubbly balloons, followed the school's guidelines religiously: 

1)      We strictly followed all rules on Mass Balloon Releases: we released only latex balloons made of natural rubber, that are 100% bio degradable. All our balloons were self-tied. We took care not to use any attachments, like threads, ribbons to the balloons, that are not bio degradable.

2)       In case of mass balloon releases, the released balloons should be hand-tied,  knotted and contained inside a bag or net before being released en mass. We are the only one in India to own and use  specially made  balloon nets for balloon release.  

3)      We never release foil balloons. Foil balloons are made of a thin , continuous film of metal over nylon and hence they are not bio-degradable. Furthermore, any foil balloon's surface can conduct electricity

4)      We always use Helium to make the balloons float. We never use Hydrogen gas to fill the balloons  as Hydrogen  is highly dangerous as it could burn and cause explosions. Hydrogen is a flammable gas. On the other hand , Helium is a colourless, odorless and tasteless non poisonous, non-flammable, non-toxic naturally occurring and environment friendly gas, that often used to fill balloons to make them fly.  It is also called a noble gas. Hydrogen gas should not be used to make the balloons float  as Hydrogen Gas is very flammable and could cause explosions and hence is very very dangerous. Many in India  use Hydrogen Gas in balloons  as it costs very less. Hydrogen is abundant on Earth and hence cheaper whereas Helium is rare on earth and hence is very very expensive. Use of Hydrogen gas to make the balloons float is so unnecessary and will have serious repercussions.  We hardly need to point out that when it comes to keeping the kids safe,  SSVM school, one of the very best schools in Coimbatore, India, always leads by example and takes extra precautions!

The brands that are showcased in a physical store are often those that offer more margins to the store and not necessarily be a good brand or a quality product. The specialty items found on the top shelf are generally chosen by local store managers based on its profit margin.

Sometime back we approached a famous Dubai based Indian Retail chain stores, headquartered in Bangalore to sell our balloons. we found some cheap quality locally made balloons on their shelves. When we pointed out this to the merchandising manager of the stores, this is what he replied “ we are not bothered about quality , we are only worried about our margins. Customers who walk into our stores always assume that we sell quality products and they blindly buy whatever we offer, assuming that this is the best quality available compared to other stores”. This is true as there is always a misconception that goods sold in big stores are of good quality. When we explained to the merchandising manager that our balloons are made from pure rubber latex, 100% bio degradable, comply with CE European Toy Safety Standards, Tested for hazardous chemicals at SGS TUV SAAR, Germany , he agreed with the quality but simply rejected stating the margin is low’

We then thought we, at bubbly balloons, will be successful selling on online market place like  amazon ,  flipkart, snapdeal and other e stores. Here we learnt a different story. There are thousands of balloons – unbranded or unknown brands that are listed on these market places. No information on where they are made, how they are made or certified. Most of them are self-certified with the words’ best quality’, ‘bio-degradable’, ‘ helium-quality’ and so on.  Here is why the balloons have to be certified:

A Toy is defined as ‘an object for children to play with’. Since balloons too are used by children to play with , balloons are classified  under the category ‘Toys’. Toy safety is the practice of ensuring that toys, are safe, usually through the application of set of safety standards. In many countries, including India, commercial toys must be able to pass safety tests in order to be sold. Many countries model their safety standards on the European Union’s EN 71 standards. The toys have to be tested safe as per the guidelines in accredited laboratories. On the 20.07.2013, the new European toy standard EN 71 part 12:  an amendment of the EN 71 part 3: migration of certain elements came into effect.  Our  balloons made by Gemar balloons, Italy are already tested regarding the new standards and passed. Our balloons have  also successfully passed TUV proof tests in relation to the new standards.

Getting back to what we were saying, when you search for balloons on these online market places, the results show some cheap locally made or Chinese balloons that do not comply with any quality. Then how do they manage to appear on the front pages? 1) The vendors list the products with very high unrelated MRP and then offer a huge discount. Thus highly discounted products are always given prominence in the search result. 2) some vendors manage to get a high customer rating by self - ordering the products among friends and relatives and who then give a 5-star rating for the product. These 5-star rated products always appear on the front pages 3) Your decision to buy based on the displayed image may not be wise, as often the images may not be the actual image , but some  downloaded attractive image from the internet that is remotely related to the product displayed.

It’s a challenge getting a good quality product at least standing shoulder to shoulder on the online marketplace with cheap quality products. The cheaper brands always find more favourable placement, particularly on online market places

6) Water Balloon Shot Put- Who can shot put their balloon the furthest?

7) Water Balloon Tag- Whoever is “it,” carries the water balloon. If you get hit and the balloon breaks then… “Tag you’re it!!”

8) Water Balloon Volleyball- 2 teams of 2 people stand holding each end of a towel. Use the towel to catch and throw the water balloon over the net!

9) Water Balloon Darts- Hang up some balloons (the smaller the easier), and see who can hit the target!

10) Water Balloon 500- You need one person to be the thrower and a group of people standing a good distance away to catch. The greater the distance, the older the kids. When throwing the balloon, the thrower announces a number value to the balloon.  If someone catches the balloon, they get the amount that was called out.  Continue this until someone racks up 500 points. To make the game longer, the thrower can call negative numbers.

Event on the 6th April at a leading hotel in our City. Occasion is first birthday girl.  Event manager convinced the customer to accept gold and red color balloons , reason he only had gold and red LED lights to make a banner. Note: Its not the customer's choice but the event manager's!!

What has the event manager promised the customer? 4 balloon poles , one arch and 6 sets of Helium bouquets for Rs10000. He said he had great difficulty convincing the customer to accept this budget stating he is going to use imported balloons and the customer expected more number of balloons for this price.

We on our part suggested as shown in the image 

This is how the event manager responded: " dont want all those accents, foil balloons... just make simple columns with only round balloons . Customer doesnt know anything about foil balloons or how incomplete the columns will look without foil balloons... customer expects 'more quantity'  than 'quality' and so just fill more balloons and match it with the budget!" Onceagain I could see my logic was not what he wanted to hear. We at bubbly balloons refused to accept the job as we do not do substandard balloon decoration jobs!   

Onceagain , we wonder why people flock to such knucklehead event managers?

Bubbly Balloons to customer: " Madam, you have called us regarding your child's birthday party". Customer: " Oh, yes, but i dont have time, you see! Please contact my event manager at 989... "

We went on to call the event organizer. He wanted to know what is the cost for ( decorating with) 200 balloons? we responded by saying that we charge as ‘per design’ basis and not as ‘per balloon’ basis , as we usually use different types, shapes , sizes of balloons and hence difficult to charge ‘per balloon’ basis. To this he said he wanted 3 balloons each on each table floating on ‘Nitrogen Gas’ . We corrected him by responding that balloons will not float with nitrogen gas. To this he said OK, its Hydrogen gas. Once again we corrected him by saying Hydrogen is an explosive , flammable and dangerous gas and one should only use helium to make the balloons float. He rudely responded ‘ its ok, it doent matter what gas you use, I want them to float’ 

We further explained that its necessary for a decorator to know what is the occasion , if it’s a birthday then whether it’s a first birthday or what is the age, whether it’s a boy or a girl , whether the customer has a theme , any color preference etc. I could see my logic was not what he wanted to hear. 

We fail to understand why people flock to such knucklehead event organizers who do not know anything about balloons.

Sometime back we met another event manager. He wanted a balloon arch in front of a restaurant . He asked us how many balloons would be there in an arch and we responded by saying around 250 balloons. While we were chatting, the customer walked in and asked the same question and to this the event organizer, believe us, responded by saying the balloon arch would have about 1000 to 1500 balloons. We made a quick exit and never returned!

We at bubbly balloons are happy that our balloon decoration training courses is receiving a positive response from women in India. 

There is a lady who has enrolled in our balloon decoration training course recently. She is from Kota, Rajasthan state, in India and is travelling 2680 kilo meters to reach Bubbly Balloons, located in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu! 

This is the 5th female candidate we are training in balloon decoration, hitherto considered as a bastion of male privilege. Its due to many reasons : 1) Women entrepreneurs often face gender-based barriers like matrimonial and cultural practices 2) lack of access to formal finance mechanisms; 3) limited mobility - the safety of female traveller is still a concern in India 4) access to information and networks, etc. 5) a balloon artist known as a ' balloon walla' in Indian parlance is considered as a profession for illiterates and cheap labour. 6) Indian balloon industry is still at its nascent stage 7) last but not the least , most part of the Indian society still does not treat men and women as equal, after thousands of years of male dominance. 

Balloon decorating or twisting or balloon modelling job is one of the most suitable jobs for women,  as the job requires gentle handling like decorating with flowers. 

In our opinion , women entrepreneurs create new jobs for themselves and others and also provide society with different solutions to its problems, while becoming economically self-reliant. Women’s entrepreneurship can make a particularly strong contribution to the economic well-being of the family and communities, poverty reduction and women’s empowerment, in a developing country like India. We are happy to see more and more Indian women are joining this industry and engaging in income –generating activities.

We came to know of many fake balloon artists approaching customers with our downloaded face book photos claiming them to be theirs. 

In a recent incident, a balloon decorator has bagged a contract for balloon decoration with Jungle safari theme birthday party, showing our decoration image. This decorator neither had the balloons for the theme nor the knowledge to create the decor. He ended up doing a shabby work.   

We came to know about this incident , recently , when the customer who happened to visit our Facebook page found the same photo shown by the decorator. After coming to know that it was done by us, she  felt she was cheated by this fake decorator. She also regretted that she had paid more for the job compared to our prices.

He had the following question to ask:

When www.flipcart.com a reputed website in India can sell the balloon for Rs425 a pack, how can we, at www.merabubbly.com,  a relatively smaller e shop, sell the same  product for Rs225 a pack? Frankly till 3oth Nov 2013, we were in fact selling the same product at Rs200 per pack and we increased our prices effective only 1st Dec 2013 due to the depreciating rupee.

We explained to the customer that we are a direct importer from Anagram balloons unlike FlipKart.  The customer was not convinced. He accused us stating we are selling a fake product!

Its a misconception that all that is sold in large stores are of better quality. This is not true. Let us narrate a story here: 

we have approached a big retail chain which showed interest in selling our balloons and party products. Despite agreeing that our products are of good quality and reasonably priced, they refused to buy our products stating that they expected a much higher margin. I had to point out that the balloons that are sold in their stores were not of good quality whereas our balloons comply with CE EN 71 European standards on toy safety and also TUV certifications. Our balloons are made form pure natural rubber latex and hence 100% bio degradable.  To this, the chief merchandiser responded like this "people always assume that big stores sell better products and so they are ready to pay more for the cheap quality balloons that we sell ; he went on to say that they were only interested in the margin they earn and not bothered about quality"

We at bubbly balloons  came across a website - an e shop  in India, operating from Bangalore,  an IT hub of India,   displaying our copyrighted printed balloon images and offering few of our balloons at an unbelievably low,  discounted price. They have fixed  their own Maximum Retail Price ( MRP) for these premium quality balloons, though the MRP is always fixed by the manufacturer or   importer of balloons as per the Standards of Weights and Measures ( Packaged Commoditieds) Rules in India and in this case by us- bubbly balloons, who is the sole importer of these premium quality balloons.

What's more, this site has also copied and used the same description we use in our web site to describe the product.
